Growing up, I did not care for plaid. I didn’t appreciate it until my adult life when I became OBSESSED with it. Much like many things in life, plaid appealed to me more and more as I aged. I learned to celebrate the unique structure of plaid and relish the diversity of how many varieties there are.
It all started back in 2010 when I had a very vivid and amazing dream. It was a beautiful picture of a black house in a magenta field with ribbon, yes silk ribbon, making a plaid design all around the house. When I woke up, I immediately needed to paint this dream on canvas and add silk ribbon as the plaid. My roommate from college (who was also in the dream) had forever opened my eyes to the beauty in fun crazy art and the joy in bright colors. She was the fine recipient of this canvas creation.
I soon became obsessed with DRAWING plaid lines. Something about their simple structure yet diverse nature appealed to me. I could draw a straight line in a million different ways and change the look and feel of piece of art. Hanging on a wall, different plaids can certainly change the look and feel of a room as well.
Fast forward to becoming a mom, I had been reading so many wonderful children’s stories about woodland creatures and their amazing little worlds. Sir Dapper Plaid was born!
I wanted to combine the idea of a rascally animal with the sophistication of plaid and fine fashion. I also love to read rhyming books to my kids. They flow off the tongue and are fun to hear.
Of course we had to include the sight words in this picture book for young readers too. A whopping 46 SIGHT WORDS are featured in this lovable poem about Sir Dapper!
I’m excited to create more adventures for Sir Dapper Plaid, telling his past, and showing his future. I also love the idea of combining lots of plaids in one room, one house, one outfit… and how terrible and amazing that could be!

Such a novel & fun idea to create a foxy character around plaid. Bet you can remember those popular plaid couches back in the 80’s!!! I love the distinctive design of Sir Dapper Plaid!
